What is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy?

CBT consists of Cognitive and Behavioral Therapy. It is the best studied and most scientific form of psychotherapy nowadays. Aaron T. Beck and Albert Ellis are the founders of CBT. The cognition’s of the client are central. Within CBT all the behaviors and thoughts of the client comes across. These thoughts and behaviors keeps the problem going.

The Theory of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

The base of CBT is formed by the cognitive model. This model suggests that our feelings and behaviors are influenced by our perception of events. Not the situation or event influence what we feel, but the way we interpret a situation or event. So thoughts about a situation lead to behaviors and feelings.

Cognitive therapy is about the way clients think and feels. There are various exercises in cognitive therapy which starts with the negative thoughts and feelings of the client. Together with the client the therapist examine those thoughts and feelings so that the client can learn to think differently.

In the behavioral therapy is about someones behavior. How a client behave influences his feelings. If you are afraid of going into a train than your fear will get worse in stead of reduce. First the client starts to report what happens exactly. Then, more appropriate behavior in that situation will be learned.

The combination of both forms of therapy is even more effective. This way it effects the way someone thinks and feels and influences the way of doing things as well.
